Brazilian Customer Struggles with Tap Life and Consistency? DIN Standard Tap Package Helps Upgrade Their Product Line

2024-05-18
 Latest company case about Brazilian Customer Struggles with Tap Life and Consistency? DIN Standard Tap Package Helps Upgrade Their Product Line

1. Market Background

Brazil has a strong base of equipment manufacturing, maintenance and engineering contractors. Thousands of small and mid-size workshops rely on taps every day to cut internal threads in carbon steel, alloy steel and stainless steel parts.

For years, many local distributors sourced taps from multiple small suppliers. This led to several common problems:

  • Highly fragmented sources – the same size tap from different batches behaves very differently.

  • Low-cost products chip or break easily, causing unstable thread quality and frequent complaints.

  • Mixed standards (DIN/ISO/local) make stock management complicated and hurt delivery reliability.

As end users demand better thread quality and longer tool life, distributors are moving from pure trading toward building a stable, traceable standardized tap portfolio.

2. Customer Profile & Application

Our Brazilian customer is a regional cutting tool and hardware distributor. Their end users include:

  • General machine shops and repair workshops;

  • Automotive component manufacturers;

  • Construction and maintenance contractors.

Typical pain points they reported:

  1. Chaotic stock structure
    The same tap size was purchased from different factories, with different standards, materials and coatings. Warehouse and replenishment became difficult.

  2. Poor and inconsistent tool life
    Machine shops complained that some batches lasted reasonably long, while others chipped after only a few holes – especially in alloy steels and harder workpieces.

  3. High after-sales cost
    Breakage, stripped threads and out-of-tolerance threads caused returns and technical disputes, consuming a lot of time and energy on the distributor’s side.

They wanted one batch of DIN standard taps with stable performance, to replace their previous scattered and unreliable sources.

3. Our Solution (Product Package & Specifications)

After analyzing the users’ workpiece materials, threading methods and common thread sizes, we supplied two key DIN tap families as a combined package:

3.1 DIN352 HSS-M2 Hand Tap Sets

  • Standard: DIN 352

  • Material: HSS-M2 high speed steel

  • Quantity: 10,500 sets

  • Form: conventional hand tap sets (normally taper, second and bottom tap)

  • Typical use: repair work, assembly and low-speed machine tapping in carbon steel, medium-strength alloy steel and some non-ferrous materials.

By unifying on DIN352 and HSS-M2, the distributor can offer a cost-effective, universal hand tap line for general maintenance and workshop use.

3.2 DIN371 / DIN376 Machine Taps (FORM B, FORM C-R35)

  • Standards:

    • DIN371 for smaller sizes with reinforced shank;

    • DIN376 for medium and larger sizes with standard shank.

  • Material: HSS-M35 cobalt high speed steel

  • Coating: TiN (TIN coated) for higher wear and heat resistance

  • Thread forms: FORM B and FORM C-R35

    • FORM B: general-purpose geometry for through-holes, with smooth chip evacuation;

    • FORM C-R35: 35° spiral flute, optimized for blind holes, lifting chips out of the hole and reducing chip packing and breakage.

  • Total quantity: 36,500 pcs (combined FORM B + FORM C-R35, allocated by size according to the customer’s demand)

  • Typical use: batch machine tapping on automatic and CNC machines in alloy steels and higher-strength materials.

All taps in this package are heat-treated, ground and coated in the same production batches, ensuring consistent tool life and thread quality across sizes.

4. Customer Feedback

After the shipment arrived in Brazil and the taps were distributed to end users, the customer collected feedback from several key machine shops:

  • Tool life clearly improved
    Especially the TiN-coated HSS-M35 machine taps performed much better in alloy steels and harder workpieces, with noticeably longer change-over intervals.

  • Fewer breakage and thread-quality complaints
    With unified DIN352 / DIN371 / DIN376 standards, thread tolerance and tapping stability became easier to control, and after-sales complaints dropped significantly.

  • Cleaner, easier stock management
    By focusing on “DIN352 hand taps + DIN371/376 FORM B / FORM C-R35 machine taps”, the distributor simplified a messy multi-brand inventory into a few clear product lines, improving purchasing, stocking and sales efficiency.

The distributor now positions these two DIN tap families as a “standard, repeatable combo” when developing new regional dealers and end-user accounts.

5. Conclusion

This shipment to Brazil – 10,500 sets of DIN352 HSS-M2 hand taps plus 36,500 pcs of DIN371/376 FORM B & FORM C-R35 HSS-M35 TiN-coated machine taps – helped the local distributor upgrade in three key ways:

  • Replace scattered, quality-fluctuating sources with a unified DIN standard and stable material system;

  • Use the HSS-M35 + TiN combination to significantly improve machine-tapping life and consistency in batch production;

  • Build a clear, easy-to-replicate tap portfolio that strengthens their brand image and pricing power in the Brazilian machining and maintenance market.
